April 13-14, 2013 - Historic Fort Wayne Flea Market
The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition (HFWC) holds a spring and fall flea market each year as a fundraiser to help support their fort maintenance, education, and renovation efforts. Revenues come from a $5.00/car parking fee and the flea market vendor table payments. This year the spring event was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14. Detroit Metro Mashup has attended this event before and we went again on Sunday. In addition to the flea market, the HFWC provides guided tours of the fort at a bargain price of $3.00. DMM has previously toured the fort, the photographic results of which can be found under the "Historical Metro" drop-down menu.
The flea market itself is always well-attended and filled with vendors having everything from desirable goods to near-inexplicable junk for sale. Because the junk often sells, it proves the adage that "one person's trash is another's treasure." Although we didn't find our treasure today, we have in the past. We've bought an antique chair, a hat, jewelry, and other things. If you get hungry from browsing and shopping, chips and drinks can be purchased within the building and other food, such as hot dogs, are available from a vendor outside.
So, If you are looking for something that you don't yet know you need, go to the Ft. Wayne flea market and find it. The fall flea market will be held on October 12 and 13 and you can use your shopping addiction as an excuse to take the fort tour and find out more about a fascinating and important piece of Detroit history. In the meantime, click on the picture stack above and enjoy the visit that DMM had.
