May 18, 2014 - Eastern Market Flower Day

Detroit’s Eastern Market’s 48th Annual Flower Day was held on Sunday May 18 this year. It was a beautiful spring day, the crowds of people were thick, and parking was, as usual, true gamesmanship with a bit of luck sprinkled in. Just like almost everyone else, DMM personnel dragged our flower cart around and tried to avoid running over toes.

New at the Market this year, at least to us, was a glass blowing display and, of course, the huge Shinola clock that is wall-mounted in Shed 3 and will move to Shed 5 when renovations are complete. Shed 5 the third building to get a make over includes public restrooms, a new floor, and includes a head to floor total renovation. Detroit’s Channel 7 news has covered the planned renovations; here is a link to their video:

The Eastern Market has been feeding Detroit since 1891 and is a major player in the revitalization of downtown Detroit via the renovations, increasing its open hours, and adding Sunday’s for vendors other than flowers and vegetables. It’s a great place to shop, relax, and grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants.
