The 34th Annual Detroit Jazz Festival was held over Labor Day weekend in Downtown Detroit, consuming several blocks up and down Woodward Avenue, beginning in the Campus Martius area and extending to the Detroit Riverfront via Hart Plaza. It is the largest free jazz festival in North America and has an extremely distinguished history, partnering for many years with the International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. Chrysler sponsored the 2013 event for it’s third year of generously doing so. They also announced a donation of $10,000 to Detroit Public School for new jazz instruments.

There were several tribute bands playing this year on five stages, with a total of 100 acts over the four-day weekend. Historic musical moments were created, as they are every year, by young artists, accomplished new artists, and artists that are already well-established in our musical lexicon. Besides the music there were numerous vendors set up selling merchandise and food along with the great restaurants, bars, and shops available in that area of the D. Street musicians seemed to be on every corner, displaying their musical abilities and waiting to be recognized by the larger musical community, while collecting a few dollars for relatively impromptu performances.

The Detroit Jazz Festival is truly one of the biggest deals in the Detroit metro region and one of the most amazing displays of musical talent you can find anywhere in the world.
