May 26, 2014 - Waterford Memorial Day Parade

The 2014 Waterford Township Memorial Day Parade was held on a hot and sunny Memorial Day this year, which is becoming the more traditional weather. Even though it was slightly cooler last year, you should always take some sunscreen and a hat! The parade began at 10 A.M. at the intersection of Sashabaw Road and Dixie Highway. From Sashabaw it headed north and ended at Williams Lake Road. We watched it from our usual vantage point in front of Donut Delight, trying to balance coffee, donuts, and cameras like some sort of famished jugglers.

Several new participants were in the parade this year and all the expectations of a parade were present, including veterans, flags, active service members, floats, bands (Waterford Mott and Kettering), Shriner cars, politicians, churches, Cub, Boy and Girl Scouts, dance troupes, business vehicles, Jeeps driving on one another’s wheels, fire trucks, motorcycle police, service groups and many more. Seriously, we can’t put up pictures of everything!

The parade was, as usual, followed by the Memorial Day ceremony held at the Drayton Plains Cemetery by the sponsors, the VFW. This year Waterford Kettering Band played taps with an echoing bugler. Following the ceremony, there were the traditional free hot dogs, soda, beer, chips and fellowship at the VFW Post 1008 hall on Airport Road. There was even a bake sale this year if you didn’t get your fill of free food or just had a sweet tooth.

This event always brings the community together for both fun and solemn remembrance of our loved ones; in particular those who have been lost to the ravages of war and the continuing failure of humanity to attain peace among ourselves. Our photos of the event are above.
